Carbon Dioxide Laser Treatment of Rhinophyma
Rhinophyma is a hyperplastic, glandular variant of Rosacea, caused by over activity of the sebaceous glands in the dermis of the skin.
The presentation can vary from a slight thickening and yellow discolouration to a very gross thickening of the skin of the nose.
The majority of patients present with recurring pimples on the nose and skin thickening causing concerns about skin cancers.
In a small percentage of patients, the skin thickening is considerable causing extreme disfigurement and resultant psychosocial distress.
Treatment
The aim is reduction of the excess tissue and is best achieved with the Carbon Dioxide Laser.
The ablation is done under general anaesthesia, the healing takes about three weeks and regular dressing changes are needed.
In the most extreme cases, more than one treatment is needed, at intervals of about four months.
The Carbon Dioxide Laser gives excellent results fore the treatment of this difficult problem.
